A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
