Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Presence

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
